First: Know What You're Actually Canceling
When people say "extended warranty," they almost always mean a vehicle service contract (VSC) — a separate add-on product sold at the finance desk. VSCs are administered by third-party companies and governed by their own contract terms, which typically include an explicit cancellation right.
This is different from a manufacturer's warranty (like the 3-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper that came with your car at no charge). You don't cancel those — they simply expire. The product you paid extra for in the finance office is the VSC, and that's the one you can cancel for a refund.

Your Legal Right to Cancel
Almost every vehicle service contract sold in the United States contains an explicit cancellation clause. It typically reads something like:
"If We cancel this Agreement after the first thirty (30) days, We or the Dealer/Seller will refund You one hundred percent (100%) of the Agreement Purchase Price less any claims paid under this Agreement."
This language — shared directly by consumers on forums like r/carbuying and r/askcarsales — shows that the right to cancel is baked into the contract itself. Dealers cannot legally override it, even though they frequently try to discourage you from exercising it.
As one top-voted comment on r/personalfinance put it: "The dealer will almost certainly not be happy about this, but they have to give you a full refund as long as you are within the terms."
Within 30 Days vs. After 30 Days
Your refund amount depends on when you cancel relative to your purchase date:
- Within 30 days (and no claims filed): Most contracts entitle you to a full refund of the purchase price. This is sometimes called the "free look" period. Act fast — once this window closes, you move to a pro-rated refund.
- After 30 days: You'll receive a pro-rated refund based on remaining time or mileage, minus any claims filed and a small cancellation fee (typically $50–$75). You can still get meaningful money back even years in.
The 30-day window is standard but not universal. Always check your actual contract — some contracts use 60 days, and a few OEM-backed warranties have different terms.
Still within 30 days? Act now.
Full refunds require no claims filed. We'll help you move fast.
Step-by-Step: How to Cancel
Step 1 — Locate Your VSC Document
Find the separate vehicle service contract document (not just the mention on your sales contract). This multi-page agreement has the administrator's name and contact info, the contract number, and the exact cancellation terms. If you can't find it, call the dealer's finance department and ask for a copy.
Step 2 — Go In Person
The universal advice from r/askcarsales is direct: "You're going to have to go in. Yes they're stalling it. Yes they're hoping you go away." Phone calls and emails are easy to ignore. Walking into the finance department creates an immediate paper trail and is much harder to deflect.
Ask to speak with the finance manager (F&I manager) — the same person who sold you the VSC. Tell them you'd like to cancel your vehicle service contract and receive the pro-rated refund per the cancellation terms in your contract.
Step 3 — Request the Cancellation Form and Get a Signed Copy
Ask for a cancellation form. This is the critical document — it officially initiates the refund process with the administrator. Fill it out and make sure the finance manager signs it. Then request your own signed copy.
Do not leave without a signed copy. Without it, you have no proof the cancellation was submitted. This is the document you'd use to escalate if the dealer later claims they never received the request.
Step 4 — Confirm the Refund Process
Ask two specific questions before you leave:
- Who processes the refund — the administrator or the dealer?
- Where will the refund go — to me directly, or to my lender?
If your VSC was rolled into your auto loan, the refund typically goes to your lender as a principal reduction on your loan balance. It won't appear as a check in your hand — but it does reduce what you owe. If you've already paid off the loan, the refund comes to you directly.
Step 5 — Follow Up in Writing
After the in-person visit, send a follow-up email or letter to the dealer confirming your cancellation request, the date it was submitted, and the signed form reference. Keep this on file.
Step 6 — Wait and Monitor
Processing typically takes 4–8 weeks. Most state regulations require administrators to process cancellations within 30–60 days. If you haven't received confirmation after 8 weeks, follow up with both the dealer and the administrator directly.

What If You Can't Get the Finance Manager on the Phone?
Go directly to the VSC administrator — you don't actually need the dealer's help to cancel. Your administrator's name and contact number are printed on your contract. Call them directly and ask to initiate cancellation. They'll guide you through their process, which often involves submitting a written request directly to them.
Going directly to the administrator bypasses the dealer entirely and is often faster. Many administrators have online cancellation portals or dedicated cancellation lines.
What About the Finance Manager Who's No Longer There?
Staff turnover is common at dealerships. If the person who sold you the VSC no longer works there, that doesn't affect your right to cancel. Ask for whoever handles finance desk operations. The cancellation form doesn't require the original salesperson — any authorized finance office employee can process it.
