Can you cancel CarShield?

Yes. CarShield contracts are cancellable, and what you get back depends on timing: a full refund within the first 30 days (no claims filed), and a prorated refund for the unused portion after that. The unused premium is money you're owed — it doesn't belong to the dealer or administrator.

Step-by-step: how to cancel

Step 1 — Gather your documents. You'll want your contract/agreement, the vehicle VIN, your account or loan number, and proof of any triggering event (payoff letter, refinance confirmation, trade-in paperwork, or total-loss settlement).

Step 2 — Call to cancel. Call 1-800-587-4162 and state clearly that you want to cancel the contract — not pause or modify it. Have your contract number ready and ask for written confirmation of the cancellation date and refund amount.

Step 3 — Put it in writing. Follow up in writing (customerservice@carshield.com) so you have a dated paper trail, and keep a copy.

Final step — Track the refund. Processing typically takes 4–6 weeks. If the contract was financed into your auto loan, the refund reduces your loan balance rather than coming to you directly.Follow up if it doesn't arrive on schedule.

How much will you get back?

Cancel within the first 30 days (no claims filed) and you're typically owed a full refund. After that, your refund is prorated by months remaining on the contract, and CarShield deducts $75 (after the initial period).

As a rule of thumb, the prorated math is: (months remaining ÷ total term) × price paid − fees. If the contract was financed into your auto loan, the refund reduces your loan balance rather than coming to you directly.

Provider-specific tips

  • Many CarShield plans are billed monthly rather than financed in a lump sum — cancelling stops future charges, but if any portion was prepaid or financed into your loan there may still be unused premium to reclaim.
  • Because the administrator is American Auto Shield, confirm whether your refund is calculated pro-rata or by the 'Rule of 78s' before you cancel.

What reduces your refund

  • Claims already paid. If a covered repair was approved, that amount is typically subtracted from your refund.
  • Cancellation fee. CarShield charges $75 (after the initial period).
  • Refund method.Pro-rata is consumer-friendly; confirm your contract isn't calculated by the "Rule of 78s," which front-loads cost.

Common questions

Is CarShield insurance?

No. CarShield markets vehicle service contracts administered by American Auto Shield, which is why you cancel through the administrator rather than a car insurer.

Will I get a check or a credit to my loan?

If you paid out of pocket, a check. If the contract was financed into your auto loan, the unused premium usually reduces your loan balance.
